Rice Mill: Food Security & Sustainability

Natural disasters, shifts in the global economy and factors such as restrictions on food imports all have negatively impacted the food security and sustainability of our children’s homes.  Children in this region usually are the first to suffer the consequences of increased food costs, so we have begun working toward long-term solutions.

Rice is the staple food in the Asian diet. With a rice mill and silo on site, the children’s home staff will be able to purchase rice paddy in bulk at a reduced cost, thus increasing the quality and quantity of rice available to the children.  Paddy rice will be hulled and milled on site each month, saving the children’s home staff significant time and expense in procuring and hauling milled rice from surrounding towns.  Between buying rice paddy in bulk and selling excess rice and milling services to local villagers, we will be able to offset 25% of the food costs of two of our children’s homes (200 children and staff), resulting in a yearly savings of $20,000.

Feeding and caring for the needs of the child soldiers and orphans we rescue is our first priority, but there are additional benefits to the rice mill and silo: the surrounding community will be able to purchase rice at reasonable prices from our mill during times of food shortages and inflated local food prices.  Providing this valuable resource to locals will not only extend the reach of this project, but will open doors for the Gospel as well, as the community feels the love of God in a tangible way.
