Two Meals

About 8 years ago an Asian missionary moved into a tribal region and began discipling young people to plant churches. His hair was already white at the age of 30 because of his frequent traumatic incarcerations for preaching Jesus.

The stunning part of this story however, was not this man and his actions: it was what those who stood behind him did. You see, his church (the real heroes of this story) fasted one week out of every month. They collected the money they saved in grocery bills and used it to support him so that he could continue sharing the story of Jesus’ love. Now, that is radical! Personally, I don’t know a single church in North America that regularly fasts so they can support mission outreach. If you do, I would love to hear about it!

What if on one side of the equation, God is allowing chaos to hit our financial systems because he loves His Church? What if He is giving us multiple opportunities to dig deeper wells of joy and sow richer friendships? What if He is hoping we do something just slightly radical as the Western Church? What if we responded out of faith instead of fear? What if we chose to skip two meals as an act of love and humility before our God on behalf of our nation and sowed into those who are in much greater need than we are?

Isaiah 58 gives us a very clear snapshot of the priorities of heaven’s economy. It describes people who fast, pray and delight in Him, yet forget the poor. God’s response, a “chosen fast,” is for us to divide our food with the hungry and to spend ourselves on behalf of the poor and oppressed. The result of this fast is that God himself visits us and gives us overflowing life in those arid places where we feel blistered and even charred by adverse circumstances. From our encounter with God’s grace amongst the poor, we can then begin to rebuild the broken structures in our society, thereby creating a legacy for generations to come.

We as a team at Divine Inheritance and many of our friends are fasting to feed children.   Please open your heart to our wonderful and faithful Father and consider fasting two meals. Fast as a family. Fast with friends. Pull in your community. Humble yourself before God. Make it a lifestyle. Experience God’s joy! Then, take the money you saved in groceries and give it to the most needy people you can think of.  We recommend child soldiers and marginalized kids, but you are welcome to respond as the Holy Spirit leads you.

The monetary impact of this fast is also exciting. To see our rough calculations on the average meal costs and how they could be used to feed orphans and child soldiers, please click on the "Two Meals Donation" button below.  Alternatively, you might prefer to sponsor a child as part of your fast, which you can do by clicking the "Sponsor a Child" button below.

May you encounter God’s grace and provision as you spend yourself on behalf of the hungry!
